Modern Minimal

Flat shutters, handle-less fronts, a tight palette and very little on show. Storage does the work so surfaces stay clear. It suits people who find a quiet room restful and are willing to put things away.

Rooms we built, chosen to show what this style looks like in practice. More of them, by room, on the projects pages.

What it takes to live in

Minimal interiors only stay minimal when the storage is planned honestly around what you own.

Materials that carry this style

  • Laminate vs acrylic vs PU vs veneer — choosing shutter finishes

The shutter finish decides how your kitchen looks and how it ages. Laminate is the hard-wearing, repairable default. Acrylic gives a high-gloss mirror face that shows fingerprints. PU paint allows any colour and a smooth matte surface, but repairs mean repainting. Veneer brings real wood grain and needs care. Most homes are best served by laminate everywhere and one premium finish where it is actually seen.

  • Plywood grades — MR vs BWR vs BWP, and where each belongs

Plywood grades describe how well the glue holds up to moisture, not how strong the wood is. MR (moisture resistant) suits dry areas like wardrobes and TV units. BWR (boiling water resistant) handles the damp of a kitchen. BWP (boiling water proof, IS:710 marine grade) belongs under the sink and anywhere water sits. Paying for BWP throughout a bedroom wastes money.
