Plywood grades — MR vs BWR vs BWP, and where each belongs

Plywood grades describe how well the glue holds up to moisture, not how strong the wood is. MR (moisture resistant) suits dry areas like wardrobes and TV units. BWR (boiling water resistant) handles the damp of a kitchen. BWP (boiling water proof, IS:710 marine grade) belongs under the sink and anywhere water sits. Paying for BWP throughout a bedroom wastes money.

What we specify as standard varies with the room and the budget, so treat anything here as typical rather than guaranteed. Your own quotation states the exact specification.

Why the grade matters more than the brand

Every plywood sheet is layers of timber veneer pressed together with adhesive. The grade tells you how that adhesive behaves when it gets wet. That is the whole difference. A premium-brand MR sheet under a kitchen sink will still fail before a mid-brand BWP sheet, because the glue was never designed for that job.

How we decide, room by room

Bedrooms and living rooms stay dry, so the carcass grade there is about stability and finish, not water. Kitchens are split: the sink base and the utility run get the highest grade, the rest gets a grade below. Bathrooms get marine-grade ply or no ply at all, depending on the layout.

Where we use it

  • Kitchen island + pendants

Common mistakes

  • Buying one grade for the whole home. MR in a sink base unit fails within a few years; BWP in a bedroom wardrobe is money spent on a risk that is not there.
  • Judging plywood by the stamp alone. Ask to see the cut edge — consistent core veneers with no gaps matter as much as the grade printed on the face.
  • Ignoring the edges. A BWP carcass with unsealed edge banding still drinks water at every exposed edge.

Questions

Is marine plywood necessary for a whole modular kitchen?

Rarely. The parts that meet water are the sink base unit and the utility run, and those are worth BWP. Wall units above the counter and tall pantry units sit well outside the splash zone, so BWR there gives you the same working life for less. Spend the difference on hardware, which is what you touch every day.

What does IS:710 mean on a plywood sheet?

IS:710 is the Indian Standard for boiling water proof plywood, the grade commonly sold as marine ply. It is tested by boiling samples and checking that the glue lines hold. IS:303 covers MR and BWR grades. The stamp tells you which test the board was made to pass, not how well the timber inside was graded.
