Hinges and drawer channels - the hardware you touch every day

Hardware is the part of an interior you operate thousands of times, and the first thing to fail when it is cheap. Soft-close hinges and channels are worth paying for. Beyond that the question is load rating and warranty, not brand name. Tandem or undermount drawer runners cost more than side-mounted ones and feel better for ten years.

What we specify as standard varies with the room and the budget, so treat anything here as typical rather than guaranteed. Your own quotation states the exact specification.

Spend here before you spend on finish

If a budget has to give somewhere, take the finish down a tier before you take the hardware down a tier.

Where we use it

  • Kitchen island + pendants

Common mistakes

  • Upgrading the shutter finish while leaving basic hardware underneath. You look at the finish; you feel the hardware every single day.
  • Loading a drawer beyond the runner rating. Deep pan drawers need a higher load rating than a cutlery drawer.
  • Not asking what happens in year four. A hinge is a consumable; what matters is whether a matching replacement can be sourced.

Questions

Is soft-close hardware worth the money?

For anything opened daily, yes. Apart from the noise, a damper stops the shutter slamming into the carcass, which is what loosens joints and chips edges over the years. It is one of the few upgrades that pays for itself in how long the furniture stays tight.

What is the difference between telescopic and tandem runners?

Telescopic runners mount on the sides of the drawer and are visible when it is open. Tandem or undermount runners sit beneath the drawer box, so you see the drawer rather than the mechanism, and they usually carry more weight and run more smoothly. They cost more per drawer.

Does the hardware brand matter?

Less than the specification. A well-specified mid-tier hinge with a real warranty will outlast a premium badge on an unsuitable load. Ask for the model and the load rating in the quote, not just a brand name.
