Kitchen layouts for Bangalore apartments

The layout is usually decided by the builder's plumbing, gas and chimney points and by the width of the utility opening, not by preference. Narrow kitchens take a straight or parallel run. A kitchen with two usable walls takes an L. U-shaped and island layouts need floor width most 2BHK flats do not have.

What we specify as standard varies with the room and the budget, so treat anything here as typical rather than guaranteed. Your own quotation states the exact specification.

Start from the services, not the shape

Gas point, drainage stack, chimney duct and the utility door. Fix those on the drawing first and the layout usually narrows to one or two sensible options.

Where we use it

  • Kitchen island + pendants

Common mistakes

  • Choosing a layout from a catalogue before checking where the drainage stack and gas point actually are.
  • Putting an island in a kitchen that then cannot open a dishwasher and a drawer at the same time.
  • Forgetting the utility. In most Bangalore flats the utility opening decides where the sink can go.

Questions

Which kitchen layout is best for a 2BHK in Bangalore?

Usually an L, because most 2BHK kitchens have two usable walls and a utility door on the third. Where the room is long and narrow with doors at both ends, a parallel run works better. The builder's plumbing position decides more of this than taste does.

Can the kitchen sink be moved?

Sometimes. Drainage needs a fall to the existing stack, and in an apartment that limits how far it can travel. Moving a sink a short distance is usually fine; moving it to the opposite wall often is not. We check this at the measurement visit before promising a layout.

Is a kitchen island worth it?

Only if the floor still works with every drawer and appliance open at once. An island that forces people to squeeze past each other makes a kitchen worse, however good it looks in a render. In most apartments the same budget buys better storage and better hardware.
