Laminate vs acrylic vs PU vs veneer — choosing shutter finishes

The shutter finish decides how your kitchen looks and how it ages. Laminate is the hard-wearing, repairable default. Acrylic gives a high-gloss mirror face that shows fingerprints. PU paint allows any colour and a smooth matte surface, but repairs mean repainting. Veneer brings real wood grain and needs care. Most homes are best served by laminate everywhere and one premium finish where it is actually seen.

What we specify as standard varies with the room and the budget, so treat anything here as typical rather than guaranteed. Your own quotation states the exact specification.

Look at the finish under the light you will actually live in

Showroom lighting flatters gloss. Bring a shutter sample to a window, then look at it again under an evening light. A finish that looks flawless at 2000 lux in a showroom can show every ripple under a warm downlight at home.

Where we use it

  • Wardrobe + window seat

  • Bedroom

Common mistakes

  • High-gloss acrylic on every kitchen shutter, in a household that cooks daily. The finish is beautiful on handover day and marked by month three.
  • Choosing a finish from a 100mm sample chip. Ask for a full shutter sample, or look at the finish on a real kitchen under normal light.
  • Forgetting the edges. Edge banding thickness and colour match decide whether a laminate shutter reads as cheap or considered.

Questions

Is acrylic worth the extra cost over laminate?

It depends on where it goes. On a set of wall units seen from the living room, acrylic changes how the whole space reads and the cost is contained. On every shutter in a working kitchen, you pay across the board and then wipe fingerprints every evening. A common compromise is acrylic above the counter, laminate below.

Can a damaged shutter be replaced later?

With laminate, usually yes — the same decor number is generally available for years and one shutter can be remade. With PU, the shutter is repainted and a colour match is likely but not guaranteed. With membrane foil, matching an older batch is the hardest. Keep a note of the exact decor codes from your project file.
