Wardrobes — sliding vs hinged

Sliding shutters save the swing space a hinged door needs, which matters when the bed sits close to the wardrobe. The trade-off is that you only ever see half the wardrobe at once, the bottom track needs cleaning, and the mechanism costs more. Hinged doors give full access to the whole interior and cost less for the same width.

What we specify as standard varies with the room and the budget, so treat anything here as typical rather than guaranteed. Your own quotation states the exact specification.

Plan the inside before the outside

Count what you own: hanging lengths, folded stacks, and the things currently living in boxes. The internal layout decides whether a wardrobe is useful. The shutter finish only decides how it looks.

Where we use it

  • Wardrobe + window seat

  • Bedroom

Common mistakes

  • Choosing sliding shutters in a room that had space for hinged ones, and paying more for less access.
  • Stopping the wardrobe below the ceiling. The gap collects dust and stores nothing; a loft section takes the suitcases.
  • Designing the internals to a standard drawing rather than to what you actually own.

Questions

How much space does a hinged wardrobe door need?

Roughly the width of the shutter in clear floor in front of it. In a bedroom where the bed runs close to the wardrobe wall, that clearance is what pushes people towards sliding shutters, even though hinged doors otherwise give better access for less money.

How deep should a wardrobe be?

Deep enough for a hanger to sit square to the back wall, plus the shutter. Shallower than that and clothes press against the door every time it closes; deeper and you are paying to store air.

Do sliding wardrobes jam?

Good rollers on a clean track run for years. Problems come from grit in the bottom track and from loading a shutter beyond its weight rating, which usually means a full-height mirror or glass. Ask what the shutter weight rating is before choosing either.
