Plywood vs MDF vs HDHMR vs particle board

Plywood is layered timber veneer: strong, holds screws well, and the default for carcasses and shutters that must last. MDF is uniform wood fibre, better for painted and routed shutters but weak once wet. HDHMR is a denser, moisture-resistant board that sits between them. Particle board is the cheapest and the first to sag or swell.

What we specify as standard varies with the room and the budget, so treat anything here as typical rather than guaranteed. Your own quotation states the exact specification.

Read a quote by the board, not the brand

Two quotes with the same square footage can differ by lakhs entirely in the board line. Ask which board goes where, in writing.

Where we use it

  • Wardrobe + window seat

  • Bedroom

Common mistakes

  • Using MDF anywhere near water. It does not swell politely and then dry out; the damage is permanent.
  • Judging by price per sheet alone. A cheaper board that needs replacing in five years costs more than the difference.
  • Assuming one board suits the whole home. Shutters, carcasses and backs have different jobs.

Questions

Is HDHMR better than plywood?

Not better, different. HDHMR is denser and more uniform, so it gives a flatter face for a high-gloss or painted finish and handles humidity well. Plywood holds screws better over repeated use, which matters for hinges and drawer runners. Many good kitchens use both, each where it performs.

Why do some quotes use particle board?

Because it is cheap, and in low-use, dry furniture such as a shelf back it is adequate. It becomes a problem in a carcass that carries weight or in a kitchen where moisture is a daily fact. If a quote looks unusually low, check the board specification line by line.

Can I mix boards in one kitchen?

Yes, and it is usually the sensible choice. Specify the grade and board per zone - the sink base unit is a different problem from a wall unit - rather than paying one premium price everywhere or accepting one cheap board everywhere.
