Lighting layers — why one ceiling light is never enough

A finished room needs three layers: ambient light for general brightness, task light where you actually do things, and accent light for depth. Builders hand over one point per room, which is ambient only. Adding the other two layers, on separate switches, is most of what makes a room feel designed at night.

What we specify as standard varies with the room and the budget, so treat anything here as typical rather than guaranteed. Your own quotation states the exact specification.

Switching is half the design

Three layers wired to one switch behave like one layer. Plan the switching groups at the same time as the fittings, so an evening in the living room does not have to be lit like an afternoon.

See also false ceiling types, since the ceiling is mostly a way to place light.

Where we use it

  • Double-height chandelier + balcony

  • Buddha panel + grass wall

Common mistakes

  • Putting every light on one switch. Three layers on one circuit behave like one layer.
  • Mixing colour temperatures within one sightline, which makes a finished home feel subtly wrong without anyone being able to say why.
  • Positioning downlights in a neat grid rather than where light is needed, which lights the floor and leaves the counter in shadow.

Questions

What colour temperature should I use at home?

Warm light in living rooms and bedrooms, neutral in kitchens, study areas and bathrooms where you need to see clearly. The rule that matters is consistency: keep one temperature within a sightline, so the living and dining ends of an open plan do not read as two different rooms.

How many downlights does a room need?

Fewer than most plans show. Downlights are a task and accent tool; using them as the only ambient source gives you a ceiling full of holes and a room full of shadows. Let a cove or a central fixture carry the ambient layer and the spots then do specific work.

When does the lighting plan have to be decided?

Before the ceiling closes and before the walls are chased, because every point has to be wired first. Adding a light afterwards means opening finished work. This is the single thing clients most often wish they had settled earlier.
